31 Days Of Horror: Day #2 - THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE

The Legend Of Hell House, 1973, Directed by John Hough
Grade: A

Conceived as sort of an homage to the Hammer Horror Pictures of the 70's which I really like, The Legend Of Hell House is one of my favorite haunted house movies.  It's proof that you can make a scary movie without tons of blood and gore, and rely solely on the suspense and atmosphere.  The writer Richard Matheson is one of my favorite storytellers, who has provided tales for The Twilight Zone,  the superb Trilogy Of Terror, and more recently the ill-fated Richard Kelly sci-fi bomb, The Box. (Which I thought was actually pretty good, so nyah.)

Consisting of a cast of British regulars, along with Roddy "Caesar" McDowall, Hell House holds your interest throughout, and not once is there a shrieking music video editing style montage, washed out gritty palettes of color, or the blasting of the latest Nine Inch Nails song to make you remember, "Hey! You are watching a hip horror movie!" (You hear that, you nutso SAW creators?)
